"Give God a Chance to Forgive"

Today I saw the sentence "Give God a Chance to Forgive" on the billboard for the First Baptist Church here in Manhattan, KS. I'm still trying to understand what that sign means. Christ already forgave on the cross. He laid His life down for the elect. When He said, "It is finished," He meant it. He's not sitting around waiting for us to give Him a chance, a possibility, to forgive. When He intends to forgive He does it. Maybe the sign should say, "Repent and turn from your sin to Christ." At any rate, this line of thought brings up the doctrine of limited atonement but I'm not sure if anyone out there really wants to hear about that...

Mr. Deaver,

If I were to guess at what the billboard that you saw might be trying to get across, I would guess that, rather than emplying that Christ's forgiveness is incomplete, the writers of that phrase were trying to say that the heart of man tends to condemn him, so rather than sit in the self pitty and condemnation of one's own heart, we should instead turn to Christ and let the forgiveness that He has to offer sink in and comfort our soul. The forgiveness of God is complete; it is finished indeed, but that doesn't mean that the heart of man will always accept or acknowlege it as such. "Giving God a chance to forgive" may be the same thing as allowing your heart to embrace the forgiveness that God has to offer in Christ.
